Nothing directly to do with an online MBA today, other than the person that I had the conversation teaches on an MBA program. We were discussing the difference that higher education makes to people who study, and how they lived their lives.

We both agreed that higher education usually helped to give people a perspective of life that allowed them to understand other points of view than their own, and this really changed how they argued, how they treated other people and how they viewed the world. On the other hand, there are always the exceptions that prove the rule, and we both could think of several......

I wrote about MBA alumni being useful as a part of your business network yesterday, and by chance I had a long conversation last night with a friend who has an MBA. We started talking about just how useful alumni can be. He said that not only had he found his last two jobs through alumni, he had started building his own management team using people from his business school.

However, he said that you have to be careful not to entirely rely on these contacts. If key people leave an organization you can find that your network has a hole in it. Once you have created the initial contact, you need to work through other people in the organization so that your network is robust and not reliant on one type of contact. That way you build for the future, making sure that you can find the people and things you want in any organization you want to deal with.
