The MBA Party

Failing Economist's cruel but fair remarks could be seen to negate the reason for studying an MBA. However, the students themselves said that contacts were the biggest single reason for doing the MBA, and as more than 50% of students finance (at least in part) thier own MBA, I have to assume that it either was worthwhile in a career sense or cheaper than a year long party - some party!

Of course, this discussion does not address the type or quality of the contacts that the graduates were refering to. I suspect that many of the contacts that were beneficial to the graduates were not the kind of contacts they would make at a really enjoyable party - or at least not at the kind of party that I would enjoy!!

Well, yes, OK, guilty: cruel, but glad you think they're fair.
However, to expand a little, I wouldn't limit such comments to MBA programs. I'm reasonably convinced that contacts are at least 50% of most educational programs. The first few years at school are more about socialising the ankle biters than teaching them anything useful. All too many college programs are marriage markets more than anything else. Why should an MBA program be different?
Of course, my year long party idea is silly: that would just select for those who are good at parties. A year long MBA program however would select for those good at MBAs: a pretty good signifier of who is going to be good and or useful in business.
So even if it is 50% to do with the contacts, it's still the program that's important.
