Online MBA ForumFriday, July 07, 2006Workshops
Like all conferences, the procedings look boring on paper. When I first looked at the workshop options, I thought I would go shopping instead. But being a good employee, I chose a couple of workshops that were least boring.
I went to the first one this morning, and to my surprise I really enjoyed it. We discussed industry expectations of graduate programs, and I found that I could both really gain from listening to the speaker, and also had some real contribution to make to the discussion. We didn't actually talk specifically about MBAs today, but tomorrow's workshop is about professional qualifications and the impact of the MBA on career paths. If it's as good at today's session, I'll really think this conference is worthwhile. # posted by Mary @ 3:29 AM

More seriously, it does sound fascinating to hear what industry actually thinks of graduate programs like the MBA. We hear a lot about what students think they will get out of MBA prgrams, even more from university and college staff who tell of all the wondrous things that will happen, but what do the actual employers think? You use the word "expectations" and I think that’s the crucial point. Not what does industry actually get from MBA graduates, and not what the graduates themselves think they’re going to get. The one thing none of us is quite sure of is what the actual purchasers, the companies, think they’re going to get. What isit that they’re actually looking for? # posted by failingeconomist : 11:13 AM
