Online MBA ForumTuesday, July 04, 2006Married Bliss
A good friend of mine has been married for some 15 years. About 6 years ago her husband gained his MBA, and it gave his career an enormous boost. He became CEO of a medium sized engineering company, and took it through a very successful cycle of expansion.
I asked her what effect this had had on her - she also has a successful career, and up until this career boost of her husband's, she had been the larger salary earner. She said that it really changed his character. He became so focussed on work that she had to take over almost all of the household matters, and it had affected her career quite adversely. However, they had eventually reached an understanding, and when the engineering company floated on the stock exchange, her husband became chairman and took more of a back seat in the business. She has just finished her MBA, so I look forward to talking to him about how it has changed her. # posted by Mary @ 12:39 AM

Things like that are always terribly disturbing, aren’t they? Marry someone and a few years later they, as you say, take an MBA program and the whole world changes. I can understand the change in the guy though: the MBA program opened the door to one of the best and most exciting jobs there is out there, running a company.

That might sound strange to some but being responsible for the continued livelihoods of hundreds of people is incredibly stimulating. There are those (very few) for whom it is too much but for most of those who do it it’s a reason to spring out of bed in the morning and greet the new day with glee. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when she finished her MBA program: will he have to start ironing his own shirts again? # posted by failingeconomist : 11:08 AM
