Online MBA ForumWednesday, June 14, 2006MBA Knowledge
Failing Economist's comments are really interesting - and the dilema is real. There is some research to suggest that we have come to think of the MBA mentality as the only one that can work in the business environment, but that this might not be entirely true. Professor Roy Jacques suggests that there is a movement bought about through the development of the "knowledge worker" whereby control and Alpha Male tactics are not effective.
What is required is at least some degree of consensus, as the knowledge worker controls the resource they're working with - knowledge. Therefore there has to be real buy in to the business strategy, and transparency as well. So maybe there will be a redefinition of the MBA mentality in the knowledge economy - does that sound likely? # posted by Mary @ 9:37 PM

I’d say Prof. Jacques has a decent handle on that MBA mentality. This is actually something that’s getting a wider hearing right across economics. "Old style" business depends upon large amounts of capital (machinery, buildings etc etc) and the typical MBA education and mentality is that we must manage these for the greatest efficiency. Great, works just fine, when labor is simply another input, a unit that can be replaced.

However, with the more modern economy, knowledge workers and the like, the capital is that very knowledge, that human capital. This goes up and down in the elevators each day and isn’t actually owned by the company at all: it’s merely rented from its owners, the labor force (or perhaps the key workers). Convincing them rather than telling them, consensus rather than orders: that’s what’s needed and sounds like what the Good Professor is saying. # posted by failingeconomist : 10:37 AM
