MBA Job Opportunities

I'm always interested in what jobs are popular, and how people work out their career paths. I happened yesterday to look at some of the websites that deal with careers for people with MBAs, and was very impressed at some of the companies that particularly target their job advertising for this group of people.

There are specialist recruitment agencies that deal only with MBA graduates, and there's certainly no lack of jobs posted on these websites. I don't know how current the jobs are, but there is quite an array of different opportunities with some really divergent career paths. However I was also quite impressed to see the number of corporations that encourage MBA graduates to apply for jobs. I saw Microsoft and several oil companies, as well as many of the financial institutions who were looking for MBA graduates.

The rise of MBAs in large corporations in the last 20-30 years is one of the untold stories of the business world. It used to be that only those destined for the very top went on an MBA program. The future CEO perhaps, maybe the COO.

Modern business has now become so complex that the requirements for the MBA qualification have moved further down the system. Increasingly, managers have to be trained as managers qua managers: rather than the older system of taking good engineers or good salesmen and then teaching them to be managers on the job.

Thus the hunger from hte large corporations for those with an MBA degree: they know they need this skill more than almost anything else.
