Executive MBA

I decided, as part of my research for this blog, to look into the difference between an executive MBA and a normal MBA. I thought that maybe there was an understood format that these programs took, which distinguished either the people that they accepted onto the course, or the roles that graduates took.

Well, there sort of is, but it's not really clear-cut. The underlying difference is the amount of experience that people have who are accepted onto the course. Usually executive MBA courses take older students who have worked at middle management and above level for some years. The executive MBA program tends to concentrate on encouraging students to work on their own projects, or to work with real situations that will have a bearing on their working lives. An executive MBA tends to be a really good program to make contacts that are useful for your future working life, and many people create their own jobs after studying on an executive MBA.

Makes some sort of sense to me, that Executive MBAs are run on slightly different lines to the more normal ones.

I think of it this way. On a regular MBA degree course there will be a lot of people straight out of their first degree, perhaps with one or two years of experience (that’s often true for banking/consulting types for example, join the firm, do two years and then off to do some post-graduate work). This means that a certain amount of time is going to have to be spent explaining to people how companies actually work.

With those who have a decade or more management experience under their belt, as those on the Executive MBA courses have, matters will obviously be different. They already know how companies work (although perhaps they need a little help on how they "should" work, to be cynical) and so the thrust of the teaching is obviously going to be different.
