Online MBA ForumTuesday, May 30, 2006New Zealand
Today, I'm not going to write anything at all about MBAs, online MBAs, GMAT, or anything related to business. I'm going to simply tell you about living in New Zealand, as it is the anniversary of my first setting foot in the country.
This is a country of around 4 million people, in a geographical area around the size of the UK (which has a population of 60 million). The air is clean, the traffic problems are minimal, and the sea and rivers are relatively unpolluted. It is perfectly possible to drive in the middle of the day for some hours in the country and not see another car. There are problems - 4 million is a very small population, and domestic markets for goods are small. And the country is a very long way from anywhere else. But with the advent of the Internet, many of these problems seem much less. # posted by Mary @ 11:16 PM

New Zealand....I’ve always been fascinated by the place for exactly the reasons you mention. There is an old joke about the airline captain who announces "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now arriving at Christchurch. Please set your watches back 30 years".

Which is perhaps slightly unfair, especially as I have a tribe of cousins spread out across the Canterbury Plains. But I agree it’s fun to drop the business, the MBA stories for a bit and look at other parts of life. The one thing that has always terribly confused me about the country is that with a population of only 4 million, as you say, they are consistently the best rugby team on the planet. How can this be when we have more people in one city in the UK than they do in the whole country? # posted by failingeconomist : 4:27 AM
