Teaching Suits

A good friend of mine teaches an MBA course on management organisation, and at the moment is in the middle of teaching. I had a long conversation with him over the weekend, to see if he had any insights into studying an MBA. He was a mine of information, and of some very definite opinions on the way that MBAs are structured.

He says that the majority of his students are in their late twenties, with some but not much experience in commerce, or their chosen career. He thinks that there should be a rule that students should have around 8 years experience in the work place, preferably half of which should be in the area that they are taking the MBA in. He says that less than this means that most students just don't see the strategic issues that are vital to understand in order to be able to take best advantage of the kind of teaching and learning that is available on an MBA. He is also a great advocate of part-time and online MBAs - full time study removes students from the immediate problems of work, which are what MBAs are all about.

He also has a theory that students hearing is affected by his clothes. He says that they all hear him much better when he wears a suit.
