Fame and the Management MBA

A management MBA is a requirement for many occupations, but for some it's just another feather in their cap. Many famous businessmen, such as Lou Gerstner and Michael Bloomberg, hold management MBAs. Perhaps the most famous management MBA holder is George W. Bush, the current U.S. president, who graduated from Harvard's management MBA program in 1975. Some might argue that the most famous management MBA holder is the single guy from ABC's The Bachelor a few seasons ago. The truth is that just about anyone who has the focus and determination to get a management MBA deserves some level of fame.

Of course, fame shouldn't be a priority for anyone pursuing a management MBA degree. A determination to succeed, a willingness to learn, and a reasonable understanding of the sacrifices that you'll have to make are good places to start. Possibly the most important thing you can bring to the table when pursuing a management MBA is experience. Perhaps this is the reason why modern management MBA programs encourage continued employment throughout your enrollment?

When you're ready to get your management MBA, don't forget to explore programs that will allow you to keep your current job, such as distance learning and online management MBA programs.

MBA Specialization

The days when just having a MBA degree was a competitive edge are long gone. As more MBA holders enter the job market, employers are looking beyond a MBA to find the right candidate.

This is not to say that MBA holders are not currently in demand. Among the many types of business degrees, employers still find a MBA degree desirable. The real differentiating factors are where you get your MBA and what specialization you add to your MBA.

As businesses become more focused, many industries require that their executives and managers possess specific skill sets. In this environment, getting a generalized MBA won't help you as much as a MBA with an added specialization specific to your chosen industry. After deciding to pursue a MBA pick a sub-major, for instance IT Management, and build your MBA curriculum around that specialization.

This information is also valuable in choosing a school. Knowing what specialization you'd like to pursue will help you weed out schools and programs that don't meet your specific career requirements. A MBA program taught by an instructor who also has experience in your specialization should be considered along with schools and programs that are highly regarded.
