Rank & File: A Few Words About MBA Ranking

One of the best ways to assess a MBA program is to check its MBA ranking. One of the most important pieces of information you can learn about a program through MBA ranking is whether you'll fit in with the type of people who generally enter that particular program. A MBA ranking is composed of information that can help you determine if the program is compatible with your profile and goals.

There are many MBA ranking resources online. Look for those MBA ranking resources that allow you to sort the data based on the criteria that is most important to you. Whether student diversity or geography are the most important factors in making your decision, chances are an MBA ranking system has the answers you're looking for.

Using a programs MBA ranking can also give you insight into the kind of competition you'll encounter in the admissions process. The more popular schools will have the highest ranking, which means most MBA candidates will look to enter that particular program. Of course, a MBA ranking only reveals half the story. You'll also want to visit or speak to program representatives long before you make a decision about the program.

Part-time or Full-time: Freedom of Choice

Pursuing an MBA is a challenging experience. The commitment will have an impact on your life in a variety of ways. When choosing an MBA program, you'll have to decide whether a full-time or part-time program is best for your particular situation.

A good deal of thought should be given to the selection process since the differences between the two types of programs are far from minor. Full-time programs are designed for candidates that have between two to six years of business experience, while part-time programs are designed for more experienced business professionals. Part-time programs are also suitable for candidates who are entering an MBA program with the support of their current employer or are planning on remaining with their current employer for the long-term.

Some drawbacks of entering a part-time program:
  • Usually take longer to complete than full-time programs.

  • Access to the career management resources is limited.

  • Networking opportunities are limited compared to full-time programs.

  • Social lives are interrupted, especially when classes take place after regular work hours or on weekend.

Some benefits of entering a part-time program:
  • The economic hardship is lessened because you can keep your current job.

  • Some companies subsidize or pay for MBA programs for their employees who choose part-time programs.

  • Program schedules are more flexible and allow for a longer time frame in which to complete the program.
