The kind of person who is motivated to study for an online MBA is often driven by ambition, and a belief that they could change the organization that they work for for the better, according to the Learning Consultancy. They are assertive, and they want to have recognition for the abilities they believe they have.
By studying an MBA they can acquire not only a qualification that is recognized as being ideally suited to many business and management positions, they also gain knowledge that they otherwise would find it difficult to acquire. But most importantly they are taught to analyse a situation, and use that analysis and the knowledge that they need to synthesize new solutions, and in many cases new ways of thinking about a situation. It's interesting that they've done studies and found trends in personalities that are more likely to get online MBAs. It seems like you'd have to be fairly driven to go after any kind of online degree, considering all the self-discipline involved. I wonder if there are any statistics out about the personality types more likely to get other kinds of online degrees.
Yes, it's a very interesting topic. Actually this study was about MBAs in general, and the comments referred to online MBAs as needing extra "umph".

I agree that studying online takes real self-discipline, and really I suspect that you have to want to do it for a specific reason as often as not. I just had a brief look to see if I could find other research about personality types and studying online, but it appears that not much research has happened in this area. Not surprising really as online degrees are relatively new. However, I've got a marker up for this kind of research into online courses, and if I find any we can open up this discussion. << Home Archives
