Agricultural Masters

I came across a really unusual MBA the other day - this was one in agricuture and forestry. Agribusiness is big business the world over, and the focus of this MBA programme was not only about the particular aspects of managing an agribusiness, but also some of the global business aspects.

I was pleased to see that for at least one of the courses students were expected to don their gumboots and get down and dirty - field informatics, that is control systems and data gathering on farms and other production units demanded a field trip - literally. Good to know that you still can't do farming without touching the soil.

Yeah, I'm not sure I can picture getting an online MBA in something that seems so hands-on as agriculture and forestry, but I guess it's possible. Do you have any idea how they do those field trips? Do students have to meet somewhere specific, or are you supposed to find your own farm somehow and ask permission to use it?

Well, it depends on the program, and the situation you find yourself in. Most institutions can arrange field trips and visits, but they may have some difficulty in sorting out the geography. But they will often have reciprocal arrangements with other educational institutions, and make arrangements.

They also will help you to design your own "field trip", and sometimes if there is the opportunity they will encourage a group of students to do this, and then add the necessary support.
