Are MBAs still hot degrees? Well, I don't think there is any really simple yes or no answer to this. MBAs will always be attractive to employers because they say something about the people who study for an MBA. You have to be enthusiastic, knowledgeable about industry, reasonably successful in order to be able to afford the fees, and see a requirement to help you on the way to the top of your career. Studying for an MBA proves to any future employer that you have these qualities.
What you learn from your MBA is another question. For many people, the subject matter is very interesting, but the most interesting part of it is learning how to apply the mixture of subjects to practical situations. This application of what is necessary in any given circumstance is the part that makes an MBA a graduate qualification. Many MBAs - including online MBAs - have very complex and taxing group work, which is the main simulation of this application of theory to practice. Here, good MBA students shine, and are able to take what they learn into their careers with them.
So, MBAs are hot degrees because they enable employers to make some assumptions about the people who study them. As long as the intake to MBA programs is fuelled by ambitious and capable students, they will stay that way.
